A valuable lesson….

I think most people can agree that most of the growth we achieve in life comes from moments where we've struggled with something.

I’ve met some remarkable people in my life. I’ve had some really great teammates and colleagues who have taught me a lot.

I think my greatest teammate I ever had was a guy named Joe Johnson. Joe was a phenomenal student in school and one of the most giving and compassionate people you’ll ever meet. After college, Joe started his own company called VADE Nutrition. Just a few years after starting VADE, Joe landed a deal on Shark Tank with Alex Rodriguez and Mark Cuban. This week, Joe landed himself on Forbes ‘30 Under 30’.

I’m not writing this to talk about Joe’s success, but to touch on a valuable lesson Joe taught me in college.

One day my freshman year at MSU I can remember a really really tough practice. If you know anything about wrestling in the Big Ten, coming in as a freshman is challenging. You’ve got to work to earn every point in the practice room. No matter how hard I think I can’t remember scoring a single point that day at practice.

I was defeated. So after practice you could’ve found me sitting alone in the corner of the MSU wrestling room with my head down. I was questioning whether or not I deserved to be there. Joe found me in the corner and sat down with me to talk. In just a few short minutes Joe gave me some of the best advice I had ever received:

“There’s no such thing as good days and bad days. There are good days...and days that you learn”
